FAQ
Frequently Asks Questions

Q: How long does it take to train a service dog to become ADA-compliant?

A: How long it takes to train an ADA-Compliant service dog is based on several factors, such as the age of the dog, the individual's disability, and how well the training methodology is determined acceptable for the personal situation to be established, and followed.  Training a ADA-compliant service dog is not a cookie cutter structure. At EmpowerPups by Hero’s Puppy for Life Organization, we emphasize The Frank Griggs Relationship Bond Training, which allows the dog and handler to grow together at a pace that suits their unique bond and situation. - Key factors that influence training time include: - The starting age and temperament of the dog - The handler’s level of engagement, availability, and consistency - The complexity of tasks required to support the individual’s disability (e.g., PTSD vs. seizure alert vs. diabetic alerts) - Whether the training is conducted in-person or virtually Because of these variables, EmpowerPups cannot guarantee a fixed timeline. However, most dogs working toward ADA-compliant status through our full in-person puppy placement program graduate within approximately 9 months upwards to two years. We can guarantee that it will not happen overnight. For virtual or self-guided training, the timeframe may vary more significantly based on progress and follow-through. Our goal is not speed, it’s creating a reliable, safe, and lasting service partnership.

Q: How is EmpowerPups different from other service dog training organizations?

A: We combine training with building a tight relationship bond between the puppy and its person, with deep community roots, and a whole-lifetime support model. Unlike many programs, we begin with puppies and train alongside their recipient from day one through the entire program and after graduation.

Q: What is Frank Griggs Relationship Bond Training for service dogs?

A: Frank Griggs Relationship Bond Training™ is a compassionate, canine training methodology developed by Frank Griggs, founder of Hero’s Puppy for Life Organization and creator of EmpowerPups. This training philosophy is built on one core belief: “True service begins with a relationship—not control.” Unlike dominance-based or fear-driven approaches, Frank Griggs Relationship Bond Training: - Uses no-harm and no-fear methods - Focuses on trust, connection, and communication - Encourages dogs to respond to requests, not commands - Begins with a puppy and grows a lifelong working bond - Empowers the handler and dog to learn together. It’s not just dog training. It’s human healing—through unconditional love, structure, and shared purpose.

Q: Do you use shock collars or fear or harm-based training?

Q: Can I self-train my own service dog through your program?

A: Yes. EmpowerPups supports self-training models through our structured guidance and relationship-based methodology. Our in-person and virtual programs provide you with the information necessary for your dog meet ADA-compliant service standards.

At the very least you can have an extremely well-trained and well-behaved dog.

Q: Where can I volunteer my support, time, or services to EmpowerPups?

A: We absolutely welcome in-person volunteer support in our training facilities in Westminster or Colorado Springs, CO. We are always looking for volunteer opportunities that some would consider "out of the box." If you have a way that will allow you volunteer and support our mission whether here in Colorado or anywhere in the U.S., we are more than willing to consider it.
